Tips on making personal care easier for your elderly loved one:
Bathing can be difficult for seniors and having someone help in the process can make it harder.. it shows the senior he/she is not as independent as they were in the past. It’s hard for them, and anyone for that matter, to accept dependence after spending decades caring for ourselves. That is why we encourage your elder to continue doing as much as he or she can. You can be the one to oversee their safety such as installing hand rails, non slip mats, and detachable shower heads to help make bathing easier and safer. Give a sponge bath until they feel more comfortable, if they are having trouble with the idea of being helped in the bathing process.
Dressing your elder - arrange their clothes in the closet and drawers in a neat manner. We like arranging clothes in “types” – skirts hanging together in one section of the closet, then blouses in another, this helps seniors feel organized and gives them the ability to better select what to wear for the day. One of our CAREGivers arranged an elderly man’s closet by complete outfits such as black pants with white shirts, etc.
Color coordinating outfits help aging seniors, when dressed, appear well dressed. This eliminates you having to redress them if they come out looking like a pizza. On many occasions we lay the clothes out on the bed for them to put on. Only help them when needed. Just because they move slowly doesn’t mean they are unable to dress themselves and pick out what they want to wear.
